IOP & Treatment The Barbell Saves Team Phoenix, AZ

Starting any new program is nerve-wracking. Starting addiction treatment is something else entirely. You're dealing with the weight of the decision itself, uncertainty about what's ahead, and — for most people — a body and mind still adjusting to early sobriety. The last thing you need is to show up on day one not knowing what to expect.

So here it is: a straightforward, honest look at what your first week of Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) at Barbell Saves actually looks like. No vague reassurances. Just a clear picture so you can walk through the door ready.

Day One: See the Space, Then Your Assessment

When you arrive for your first day, we don't throw you into a clinical session immediately. You start with a tour — a real, unhurried walk through the facility so you know where you are before anything else happens. You'll see the waiting area, the group rooms, the gym, and meet a few faces. That first look around matters more than people expect. Knowing the physical space helps your nervous system settle.

After the orientation to the space, you'll sit down for your clinical assessment with one of our licensed counselors. This isn't a test — there are no right or wrong answers. It's a conversation designed to understand your history, your goals, and what level of care makes the most sense for you. We'll talk about substance use history, mental health, living situation, work or school obligations, and what's brought you here now. Your insurance has already been verified before you arrive, so there are no surprises on that front — day one is entirely focused on you.

Plan for day one to be a longer day than most. That's intentional. We're working to gather as much information as we can so we can develop the best possible treatment plan for you. The time we invest on day one shapes everything that comes after it.

After your assessment, you'll move into your first group session and the program begins in earnest. Group is the backbone of IOP — it's where most of the clinical work happens. On day one, you are not expected to share anything you're not ready to share. You can listen. You can observe. Most people in the group have been where you are and remember what day one feels like.

What Group Therapy Actually Looks Like:

By the end of day one, most new clients tell us the same thing: it wasn't what they expected, and it was easier than they feared.

Days Two Through Five: Finding Your Footing

IOP at Barbell Saves runs five days a week, with sessions structured around your individualized treatment plan. By your second and third sessions, a few things start to shift.

You begin to recognize faces. The group dynamic starts to feel familiar. The format becomes predictable in a way that feels grounding rather than boring. Predictability and routine are genuinely therapeutic in early recovery — your nervous system has been through a lot, and structure helps it settle.

You'll also begin your individual therapy track this week. Your assigned counselor will meet with you one-on-one to begin building your personalized treatment plan, set goals, and start working through whatever you came in carrying. Individual sessions are private, confidential, and entirely focused on you.

Other Things Happening in Week One:

What You Might Feel in Week One (And Why It's Normal)

Let's be honest about the emotional landscape of the first week. It's rarely smooth.

Many people feel a wave of relief followed almost immediately by anxiety. The relief comes from having made the decision and taken action. The anxiety comes from everything that surfaces when you stop numbing it. This is normal. It's actually a sign the process is working.

Common First-Week Experiences:

Our clinical team is trained specifically to support people through the first week. You will not be left to navigate these feelings alone.

What You Don't Have to Do in Week One

Here's something we tell every new client: you don't have to have it figured out. You don't have to know why you're here, what caused this, or what your life is going to look like on the other side. You don't have to be ready to talk about everything. You don't have to perform recovery.

The only thing we ask of week one is that you show up. That's it. The rest unfolds from there.

What Comes After Week One

IOP at Barbell Saves typically runs 12–16 weeks, depending on your treatment plan and progress. After week one, the work deepens — but it also becomes more familiar, more relational, and often more meaningful than people expect coming in.

You'll build skills you'll use for the rest of your life. You'll build relationships with people who understand your experience from the inside. And you'll have access to our on-site gym and fitness programming — which, as we've written about elsewhere, is one of the most underutilized and effective tools in lasting recovery.

When you complete the program, you'll graduate with a free lifetime membership to our facility. Because recovery doesn't stop at discharge — and neither does our commitment to you.

Ready to See It for Yourself?

The best way to know what your first week will feel like is to come in for an assessment. No commitment, no pressure — just a conversation with someone who can give you a real picture of what treatment here looks like and whether it's the right fit.
